The End is Near - Massive Ship to call on FH
MV The World will make a call here in Friday Harbor on Monday and Tuesday next week.
Info via Wikipedia:
The World flies a Bahamas flag and has a gross tonnage of 43,524 tons. The vessel is 644 feet (196 m) long, 98 feet (30 m) wide, and has a 22-foot (6.7 m) draft, 12 decks, and a maximum speed of 18.5 knots (34.3 km/h). The crew numbers 250.
The ship has 165 residential units (106 apartments, 19 studio apartments, and 40 studios), all owned by the ship's residents. The ship carries between 100 and 300 residents and their guests.

(Ed. note: I've never seen a vessel this large in our local waters. She will anchor out and tender folks in. For comparison, the WSF Super Class vessels are 2,813 gross tons. They are typically the largest vessels regularly plying local waters.)

Hi Richard,
Wow, I certainly agree with you that "the End is near". But when we think about it this might be the beginning of good things for FH, as maybe some of the other larger cruise lines will copy them.
This may well be the first time the PS Pilots have brought a big ship down Speiden and San Juan Channels, but they go into much tighter places than this in Alaska, and also in Gulf Islands. Maybe they'll use tractor tug escorts bcs are so handy.

Wow, that will certainly make everything else in the harbor look tiny. Post something when it arrives, I may head to Friday Harbor to take a look.
Enjoy her visit she is a remarkable vessel. Do be aware however that there will be a security zone around the vessel. I am sure, particularly that this is a first timer, the USCG will have a presence. It would be good practice not to approach closer than 100 meters/300 feet until one sees how things go. Richard stand-by in case she needs mooring assistance- never mind those tractor tugs- you the man!! Happy July 4th. all hands.
Good Watch
Hi Peter,
Great note on the Security Zone.
I have seen more large yachts (100'+) already this year than ever before in the San Juans. Must be the recession?

This would be a total disaster for the San Juan Islands. Or at least the Islands that we currently know and love. You only have to take a Caribbean cruise to see the devastating effect that cruise lines have on the culture of small island communities.
Great money for some businesses but the community is ruined. St Thomas can get up to 7 2000 +/- person cruise ships per day every day during their busy season.
Who really wants to go down that rabbit hole in the San Juan's?
Bill,
I always used to visit St. Thomas for a day whenever I went back home to PR. It had some tourist traps, but it wasn't crowded, and it was a fun place to visit. Now, due to the overcrowding, I never go there.
As The World is not a cruise ship, per se, but a residential ship, it will not have the cruise ship impact. There are just a few hundred – as opposed to a few thousand – that would mark a visit. She takes a few years to circumnavigate the globe, with each stop a newsworthy event. It’s an honor to host the ship. (She just made a stop here in Portland, and they had her fenced off to visitors. They are VERY protective. We also tried to interview crew members and were brushed off.)(Would also be interesting to know what an apartment costs.) I am curious as to where they anchor her in Friday Harbor, because she will be as big as a mountain there. I am surprised it’s not Roche Harbor, which is more accustomed to those kinds of superstar visits, but lacks the shopping and ‘community.’ Richard, please get lots of pics, because this will be amazing. What I’d give to be there…
The World is anchoring in the Queen Charlotte Islands on the 21/22. We have never seen anything that big in here mainly because of water depths and lack of facilities for even a hundred people at a time. She will anchor out and tender in. Not sure I want to see more of them in our harbour.
Smiles from Haida Gwaii
P.S. Condos range in price from $1.5 to $7 million!!
Too bad it has no extra features on the back of the ship, like pools, etc...
