Assistance Towing & Rambling Maritime Information
BitterEnd refers to the end of a line (never a rope) that is secured to a (towing) bitt. The working end of a line is referred to as the Standing End.
BitterEnd Logo: The aquamarine octopus on a dark blue ground symbolizes the Salish Sea, BitterEnd's stomping grounds. Enteroctopus dolfleini, the giant Pacific octopus, is indigenous to local waters and is the largest octopus on the planet. One is always lurking somewhere below the surface.
The 2009 season will see a number of posts via my cell phone. The posts may be lacking in format, but not in content.

I think it is Marina Del Rey in LA
Yes that is Marina del Rey, home of that party boat "Fanta Sea One" in background.
This should be "Photo of the Year".
Amazing that the guy seems more concerned about his dock line than his truck, and the driver must still be in the truck, likely unable to get out
Thanks guys,
Me thinks we should have some type of Darwin Award for stupid boat tricks.
This one would be a contender.
Being a resident I have to believe its FLORIDA, trying to read his tag. Also that tour boat looks vaguely familiar. Well now here is a candidate for by 'experienced boater award'. Come to think of it I wonder if he has a DMV license.
Good heavens where is this stuff going to end and when.
Good Watch
It seems on closer inspection, by my 73 year old eyes, that the tour boat is "Fanta Sea One" which my research shows operates out of Marina del Rey, CA. Of course if I had read the other comments properly instead of rushing to write a comment I would have known that!! Oh well lesson learnt even this late in life!!
Good Watch
The answer was also was printed across the stern of the Sheriff's patrol boat - "Marina Del Ray", just had to add that - - Where is all the hand wringing and crying towels - wait, this guy doesn't have a 47 footer - -, I'm also thinking the guy in pict is the "wrecker driver" I am working hard NOT to show ANY form of "pompous" criticism - BUT THIS IS A CLASSIC!!! Capt "Deb" deserves the "find of the season" award for this one!!! - - oops I'll tone it down - Back in the day, I spent 3 years on the CGC Point Hobart in Oceanside, CA. We were berthed right next to the launch ramp, that was the best weekend's entertainment!!! Never topped this one!! -
If you look closly, you can see a tow strap attached to the lower left hand side of the trailer.. So I am guessing this picture was taken while they were in the process of trying to get it out.
Also - anybody notice the license plate on the trailer? It appears to be an Arizona plate... (check out the color scheme)
The plate is definitely from Arizona.
A classic that I'll add to my photo collection of stupid boat owners.

scarry thing is this person probably took a boating class sponsored by the uscg and has some type of state or maybe even a federal operators license or permit.
O.K. - "Anon", where are you going with that one?? As one of the instructors for the local USCG Aux Boating Safety classes, in the "Trailering your Boat" class, I am pretty sure our instructions, (with photo's & diagrams) to our students was quite clear - "boat" goes in water NOT tow vehicle, I think most of our Boating Safety courses are far better than "nothing", I would say the chances of this person NOT having a uscg "sponsored" boating safety class are much higher than the odds that he/she did. I wish we could know what 'really" caused this; I might wager -1. Alcohol/Drugs, 2. Young or inexperienced driver, 3. Parking brake, (vehicle parked above ramp, driver exits, vehicle rolls forward in to drink( - - or combination - and so on and so on - - " Charlie
Or.....he just got back from having a front bumper trailer ball installed so.."The tow vehicle can be driven forward to launch the boat. Thus eliminating the backing down the ramp." He just forgot one teeny, weeny step.
