BitterEnd Burgee Contest

Generic Burgee

It's been a while since our last contest. We are looking for a unique BitterEnd Burgee to be used for the raft up, contests, friends, gifts etc.

Here's the deal. Design the winning BitterEnd Burgee and you'll get several of them for the effort and a boat ride here in the San Juans. (unfortunately - you need to get here for me to pay off.)

All submissions (jpegs only please) will be placed on the blog, and I'll seek input from readers, but retain 51% of the votes. The contest will close on July 31, 2008 at 23:59 PDT.

The Burgee will be featured at the annual BitterEnd Raft Up 2.0, Sept. 5-7, 2008 at Fossil Bay, Sucia Island. There are a few unique surprises planned for the raft up as well. All are welcome to attend. Additionally the Burgee will fly aboard Remedy and Diligence.

Email your entries HERE.

From the Illistrated Dictionary of Vexillogogy

Burgee 1) An identifying flag aboard ship; either triangular or swallowtail in shape.
2) Strictly, a flag or pennant that ends in a swallow-tail of two points.

You can find more info on Burgees at Wikipedia, here.

OMG: The first entry arrived in about two hours. Here it is:

(updated 7/10/08 with user designed art)

I’ve attached an entry, on behalf of our 19 month old son Christian. He had his first boat trip this weekend, just a short trip over to Langley for the day. I hope he grows up to respect and appreciate boating as much as we have.

I chose the cleat and rope since I think that represents peace of mind when you show up to a call and is symbolic of the ‘Bitter end’. Luckily we have never had to require your services (yet), but I can only imagine that feeling when you approach a boater in need, and at that moment they know everything will be ok. Thank you for sharing your experiences with the rest of us, I know it’s made me a better boater learning from your commentary and suggestions.

Unless contributors have original art/graphics to offer, they/you will run into copyright violations. This art was just a cut and paste from the web: http://www.usps.org/localusps/potomac/graphics/cleat.gif
