Look for a report on my TWIC enrollment experience later today or tomorrow on gCaptain. Just think DMV, and you'll get the idea.
Tuesday, February 26, 2008 update: The post is here.
Lots of professional mariners have asked: Do I need a TWIC? YES, see the link below.
The Coast Guard also amends it merchant mariner regulations to incorporate the requirement to obtain a TWIC.

You may want to get the word out about the new 46 CFR 10.113 which states, "By 25 September 2008 all mariners holding an active License, Certificate of Registry or STCW endorsement issued under this part must hold a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration under 49 CFR part 1572. Failure to obtain or hold a valid TWIC may serve as a basis for suspension or revocation of a mariner’s license, COR or STCW endorsement under 46 U.S.C. 7702 and 7703."
There is an equivalent reg for MMD holders and civil penalty provisions for marine employers who use mariners without a TWIC after the deadline (46 CFR 12 and 15 respectively). Please spread the word to the charter fleet if you can.
Good Stuff Anonymous
could not talk to the TWIC tollfree
spent more wasted time trying to re-access my pre-enroll (I think it is hosed ) to get an appointment, BUT when I went there
they "did" me right now...painless
except for the price...only looked at my MMD, nothing else.. they will not take a personal check, but have a credit card "swipe"..was 15min total time
Advised the lady she had taken a hit on your site....she smiled and asked me what I thought, and I smiled back ...... and Richard, they had signs up to Point the way..thanks..
First, the "card" I posted is bogus, it's a mock up, that I pasted my name and pic to.
Doug, I sent the TSA a copy of my post over at gCaptian.
Glad to see it got a response. Hopefully they were on time the yesterday and today.
Take a look at the experience of David of the Steam Ship Virgina V. Story of his experiences with getting his TWIC card. MARINER UPDATE ON THE TWIC PROCESS on the Maritime Licensing website.
I wonder how secure this TWIC card is. I think I'll go over to "Think Geek" website and purchase a RFID Experimentation Kit. One huge lesson I learned from computer security is that the more complex the system becomes the easier it is to break. Oh and while I'm at it, I should get one of those RFID Blocking Passport Billfold.
