Seattle Boat Show - Begins Today

View from the mezzanine.

I'm off to the boat show today. Their website is here.

17:00 - Having returned from the Big Seattle Boat Show unimpressed, my fear is that I have become jaded. A few years back, I vowed to attend the Boat Show every other year. BTW - I went last year. So much for my vow.

Keeping abreast of the industry means that there is really little new to see at the show. The usual vendor attempts to engage each passer by gets old quickly; "So what kind of boat do you own?" "Do you got out very often?" ..... or some variation on the theme.

The promotion has been hot and heavy. "The biggest boat show ever - a record number of vendors." A captain friend of mine said it best, "In a marginal economy, everyone believes that additional money spent on marketing will give them the edge." Well, all the vendors working at it. This show goes on for nine days. Having worked the show in the past, I know it can be a grind.

I did spend $15 to renew my membership in RBAW:
For more than thirty five years, the RECREATIONAL BOATING ASSOCIATION OF WASHINGTON (formerly Interclub Boating Association of Washington) has been a forum to bring together a common voice in the ideas, aims and objectives of Washington State Boaters.

(Ed. note: RBAW porvides a great service in the name of recreational boating.)

Great blog! I just found you while I was doing a Google search for info on WSF's ferry maintenance. I learned more here in five minutes than I found out on the entire WSF Web site. Big surprise there, huh?

Our paper here on Vashon doesn't cover this issue nearly as in-depth as you guys do up there, either, so I really appreciate the newspaper links.

So, when do you all reckon that WSF knew it was going to pull the Chelan on Jan. 14? The official line is that they didn't know until the 11th. Not that anyone would believe such a ridiculous statement, but in fact I heard dockworkers talking about it on Wednesday morning (Jan. 9). If they knew it, then the higher-ups had to have known much earlier. It appears that they are trying to cover up the way it was handled, telling us at 3 p.m. on a Friday that our service would be cut by one-third on Monday morning. Just to make things even more fun, they handed out the wrong schedule, and then they changed it a few days later after Paula Hammond rode the boat to get rider input. Unfortunately for us, she only rode the Southworth run, so they made changes that helped Southworth nominally but made things worse for us.

Anyway, thanks for an informative site. I'll be back!!

Anonymous,

You're a hoot. The WSF's PR Department has to spin as best they can, a message of gloom and doom.

They have the worst job in show business.
