The Military Sealift Command is a transportation component of the Department of Defense. The big difference is that the service is manned by civilian Merchant Mariners. In fact the MSC employs 8,000 mariners on the water. It is the largest employer of mariners in the USA.
The MSC operates 120 ships, and has a reserve fleet of another 100 ships keep at a reduced operating status.
