One Loose Nut

It's that "Oh my god" moment we've all had when something is in the process of going wrong. One loose nut caused the BC Ferry, "Queen of Oak Bay," to loose steerage back in June of 2005.

In the maritime world the term, "Not Under Command," describes a vessel which through some exceptional circumstance is unable to maneuver and keep out of the way of another vessel.

All deck officers work hard to avoid "extremis." Most dictionaries describe extremis as point of death - at last extremity. In class I describe it as the point you would utter the words "oh shit."

The official Transportation Safety Board of Canada report is HERE.

This from The Monitor, via gCaptain and FredFryInternational.
